Introduction

Food - Traditional & Homegrown

We don't have a French kitchen here, quite honestly not even close - BUT, we take pride in the gourmet tastes of homegrown traditional foods.
Our meats, vegetables, wines, fruits, and cakes all come directly from our natural surroundings. We have a long tradition of Oriental style sweets, Bosnian and Viennese style meats, and Herzegovina wines that may take you in spirit to roaming fields of Chateauneuf du Pape in the south of France.
Free of techno agriculture our foods and drink are healthy, tasty and straight from the Mother Earth. If you try a cevapcici (specialty 'sausages' cooked over an open flame) in downtown Sarajevo you'll notice right away the freshness of its taste. The fruits on our fruit stands come from our gardens
grown on the sunny mountainsides.

Coffee is the rule here, Turkish style or espresso, it doesn't matter. What does matter is that you'll drink a lot of it so do enjoy a marvelous oriental sweet while you’re at it. Bosnians have long upheld the tradition of great sweet shops and many Albanian migrants from Kosovo and Macedonia (from the old Yugoslavia days) have set up shop all over the country to bring you sweet specialties from the Orient. If you get a chance do stop by for some fresh goat or sheep grilled, in its entirety, right in front of you over an open fire. From the mountainside to your dinner plate you won't be able to find as fresh and tasty a meat dish as this!
Then there is pita (pie) made from meat, potatoes, spinach, or cheese. Its a wonder- fully yummy and inexpensive Bosnian lunch. Careful - you may get addicted! Many variations of cheese are also available and served with most meals. Mladi sir (young cheese) and Travnik cheese are the most popular.
